J’aime mon île, j’y ai vécu, et n’y retourne pas assez à mon goût. C’est comme ça. Créole, oui, mais je dirais plutôt caribéen et même océan Indien, avec ­notamment le batteur qui est d’origine malgache. Ces rythmes coulent dans mes veines. Si j’étais né dans la Creuse, l’album aurait sans doute eu une autre résonance. Là, c’est davantage un disque moderne, éclairé par la présence de Camille Bazbaz. On est très loin du doudouïsme, de la torpeur, la plage, le ti-punch et les cocotiers ! Je passe pour un ­dilettante. La vérité, c’est que je suis un pro de l’amateurisme.

Est-ce que vos tubes comme, “Les bambous”, “Avec les filles” ou “Kolé Séré” vous permettent de vivre ­oisivement ? En aucun cas. A l’époque, je n’étais ni auteur ni compositeur, et j’ai pas mal partagé les royalties, notamment avec Jocelyne Beroard. Mais, si j’étais dans la panade la plus totale, je tiens là un petit patrimoine qui pourrait donner un tour de chant d’une heure. Mais franchement, ça, je ne sais pas bien faire. On ne peut pas indéfiniment refaire la même chose.

Et il y avait la radio, Radio Cuba, Radio La Havane. On savait qu’il se passait des choses ailleurs.
